Vertitox was an R&d Project carried out in collaboration with various prestigious universities for the development of procedures for the “Integrated Operative Control” of Discharges to the Coastal Environment (urban and industrial), by means of the use of biomarkers, bioassays and other factors indicative of the state of the environment.
It was recognized by the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine, and its general goal centred upon the development of standardised procedures which would incorporate innovative methodological approaches to the design of integrated “operative controls” which, in accordance with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, should be designed and implemented in future Hydrological Plans, in order to evaluate the effects of such spillage (urban and industrial) which, due to its seriousness, might pose a risk to the environmental state of the coastal water masses.
