The existing Urbinaga Station, which currently serves the Bilbao Metro (MTB), had from its conception complex demands on design due to the difficult orography of the area, and to the fact that it is located on a viaduct over the rail tracks and on an uphill.

The objective is to transform the existing facilities and infrastructure into an intermodal station that will allow the communication between several modes of transport, including not only the mentioned Bilbao Metro (MTB) but also the existing Renfe conventional rail (Cercanías line C1) in the first stage and the Light Rail to be built in the near future to connect this station with the University of the Basque Country in Leioa, Vizcaya. In the same way, the project includes the urban infrastructure development of the Simondrogas district in Sestao, Vizacaya.
